Pride and Sadness, Butterfly Style

Grandma Kathy and Grandpa Mike bought Ana a butterfly farm for her birthday. The premise is simple: we ordered five live caterpillars, some food, and let them stuff their mouths for ten days. At the end of those days they spun cocoons, which Ana then hung from a mesh cage. After ten days the cocoons opened and the butterflies crawled out -- a delight for Ana. We fed them sugar water for a few days and then released them last weekend. Ana seemed overjoyed to do so, but then after they flew away I noticed a twist of sadness to her face. "How are you feeling?" I asked. She looked and me and said: "I feel proud and sad." I know what she means. That's how it feels watching your kid grow up.
