Recently, when Ana does something naughty, like throw a cup of milk, throw food or kick her toy box over, she'll pause, look at us as we're about to reprimand her and say: "I'm just a little shy." What the heck does 'shy' have to do with it? we'll ask. She'll shrug. "I guess I'm just a little shy," she'll say again. We still thoughtfully reprimand her, but the mystery of the "Shy Defense" baffles us. The only thing we can guess is that at daycare she heard some kid use this line to get out of what Ana perceived to be a chore (like hanging out with someone new).
