Some young children are born into households where the father is an avid sports fan. These tikes are quickly integrated into mainstream athletic culture; they are given tiny footballs and dressed in team colors before they even leaving the hospital. Ana, sadly, was born to a comic book geek. Despite myself, I can't help but wanting read stacks and stacks of comic books and so her childhood torture will be different. Today was the Spring Comic Book Convention in St. Paul, where comic fans escaped from their mother's basement, dressed like super heros, and walked into a giant convention center so they could publicly trade, buy and talk about comic books in "broad daylight." Now Ana has been to a few comic book shops in her life, but I knew this would be different. So I packed her up and off we went. There were men dressed like Darth Vadar, a few Jokers (several Dark Knight variations but also an impressive 1960's vintage) and of course, a Spiderman and Bargirl. I thought she would get a kick out of, but she was not impressed at all. Still, people were impressed by her (she was one of the few babies there). Being a true comic geek, I felt the need to document this momentous event, even though it bored the crap out of her (check out the vacant eyes). Still, she was very patient with me while I bought my comics, so I made it up to her afterwards -- we went to a park and I pushed her for a while on the swing.
Ana with Batgirl
But Ana refuses to make eye contact...
Ana with Papi, waiting to enter (she would rather text on my phone)...
Ana with Spiderman
She considers taking his hand, but then...
She would rather suck her fingers...
Ana's reward: the swing afterwards...
i can't decide which i would rather do...meet spiderman or get on a swing again. hmmm....
